Sights I saw:
Hermitage Museum & Admiralty - this is a well renowned site in St Petersburg. Hermitage is museum compared to the Louvre. It is one of the oldest and largest in the world; founded by Catherine the Great in 1764. Very diverse range of artwork/sculptures/exhibitions. You could spend days in here looking at the 3million pieces!
Summer gardens & surrounding canals/bridges (Palace Embankment) - more like Winter gardens in this case, but still incredibly beautiful. Favourite part of city. Reminded me of Amsterdam and Venice (in fact, Peter wanted the city to remind him of precisely those places). Large iron-cast railing with granite columns around the gardens (symbol of St P's for some reason).
Peter and Paul Fortress - founded by St Peter in 1703 on Hare Island by the north bank of the Neva River. The creation of the city started here. A cannon is still fired every day at noon; a tradition that was established when the fortress was founded. Soon after it was built it was used as a political prison and torture-chamber. Over the course of two hundred years, its bastions and casemates held countless state prisoners.
